TL;DR
Telegram is sometimes described as “encrypted” without qualification. The reality is that Telegram’s default chats are encrypted between you and Telegram’s servers, but Telegram itself can read them. Only “Secret Chats,” which are device-to-device and don’t exist for groups, are end-to-end encrypted. For a family chat, that distinction matters. Shoal is encrypted by default for every conversation, on every device, with no toggle to remember.
What Telegram does well
Telegram is genuinely impressive in scope. Groups of up to 200,000 members. Channels for one-to-many broadcast. File uploads up to several gigabytes. Message scheduling, polls, bots, custom themes, multiple device sync without losing access. For users who want a feature-rich communicator that handles communities and broadcasts as well as direct messages, Telegram has a lot going for it.
Where Shoal is different
Encryption by default, every conversation. Every message in Shoal is encrypted on the sending device. There’s no “Secret Chat” toggle to remember, because regular chats are already secret. This applies to every conversation in your family, including group ones.
Family scale, not crowd scale. Shoal isn’t trying to host channels of 200,000 strangers. The product is structured around small, persistent groups of people who actually know each other.
No discovery of strangers. Telegram’s design encourages discovery — public channels, joinable groups, bots that surface content. Shoal has none of that. The only people in your conversations are people an admin in your family has explicitly added or approved.
Family admin oversight. Telegram has no equivalent of Shoal’s structural admin oversight for children. You can monitor a child’s Telegram account if they hand you their device or set up Family Sharing on iOS, but the app itself doesn’t model families.

When to pick which
Pick Telegram if you need huge group chats, public channels, large file sharing, or bot-driven workflows. Telegram is a tool for that kind of audience.
Pick Shoal if your communication is specifically about your family, you want every conversation encrypted end-to-end without thinking about it, and you want an app that doesn’t shade into broadcast and discovery.
